Eastern Bexar County

Listings in Adkins, TX

Welcome to Adkins, an unincorporated community in eastern Bexar County, where rural acreage and small-town roots meet the edge of fast-growing San Antonio.

Adkins is an unincorporated community in eastern Bexar County, Texas, about 14 miles east of downtown San Antonio, at the junction of Loop 1604 and Farm to Market Road 1518. Its history dates to the 1880s, when it became a flag station on the Galveston, Harrisburg and San Antonio Railway, and a post office followed in 1896. For most of its history Adkins remained a small rural settlement, with roughly 100 residents and two churches by 1910 and about 150 people by 1940. The community's trajectory changed as San Antonio grew into a major city. By the 1990s Adkins counted several hundred residents and dozens of businesses, and in the decades since, the eastward expansion of the San Antonio metro area has brought new residential development to the surrounding countryside while much of the area retains its rural, acreage-oriented character. Adkins sits within the East Central Independent School District, which serves the eastern and southeastern reaches of Bexar County. The community's location along Loop 1604—San Antonio's outer beltway—and Farm Road 1518 places it at the leading edge of the metro's suburban growth, with access to San Antonio's east-side employment, military, and commercial centers. Life in Adkins remains defined by space and a slower rhythm. Large residential lots, ranch-style homes, and agricultural parcels are common, and the community retains the feel of a rural crossroads rather than a dense suburb. For shopping, services, and entertainment, residents rely on San Antonio, which is a short drive west, while nearby towns and the open Hill Country to the east and south provide additional recreation. Adkins appeals to those seeking acreage and a quieter setting within commuting distance of one of Texas's largest cities.

About Adkins

Real Estate & Housing

Housing around Adkins is dominated by single-family homes on larger lots, reflecting the community's rural heritage and acreage-oriented character. Ranch-style and custom homes on parcels of an acre or more are common, alongside newer subdivisions that have appeared as San Antonio's growth pushes east. Manufactured and mobile homes are also part of the local housing mix. The result is a market that offers more space and fewer urban constraints than in-town San Antonio, appealing to buyers seeking room for animals, workshops, or simply more land.

Neighborhoods

Adkins has no formal incorporated neighborhoods; it is a collection of rural roads, subdivisions, and acreage parcels around the Loop 1604 and FM 1518 crossroads. The community's unincorporated status means it lacks its own city government, with services provided by Bexar County. Nearby incorporated areas and the larger east-side San Antonio suburbs provide schools, shopping, and services. The surrounding countryside is dotted with small farms, ranchettes, and newer residential enclaves.

Lifestyle in Adkins

Adkins offers a rural, laid-back lifestyle at the edge of a major city. Residents value space, privacy, and room for animals or equipment, and the community retains the feel of a small Texas crossroads. There is no dense downtown; daily life revolves around homes and acreage, with errands and entertainment reached in San Antonio. The area attracts families, tradespeople, and those seeking a quieter, more spread-out setting while staying within easy reach of San Antonio's employment base.

Schools & Education

Adkins is served by the East Central Independent School District, which covers eastern and southeastern Bexar County. The district operates a network of elementary, middle, and high schools serving the communities along the Loop 1604 corridor and beyond. East Central ISD's campuses provide the primary public education option for Adkins-area families, with additional private and charter choices available in the broader San Antonio region.

Getting Around

Adkins sits at the junction of Loop 1604, San Antonio's outer beltway, and Farm to Market Road 1518, about 14 miles east of downtown San Antonio. Loop 1604 provides direct access to San Antonio's east side and connects to Interstates 10 and 35 for regional travel. The community's position gives residents a manageable commute into San Antonio and the surrounding metro while maintaining a rural setting at the edge of the city's growth.

Parks & Recreation

Recreation around Adkins is oriented toward the outdoors and the surrounding countryside. The community's acreage and open space support riding, gardening, and rural hobbies, and the nearby Hill Country and South Texas countryside offer hunting, fishing, and open-road recreation. San Antonio's parks, the San Antonio River, and regional lakes are a short drive away, while the community itself remains a quiet, spread-out setting removed from urban congestion.
